Adventure Club 2009 St. Maarten Dream Vacation
If you're looking for an island vacation with the perfect blend of daytime and nighttime activities, non-stop action or a peaceful retreat, look no further.
Location
The island of Sint Maarten / St Martin is located in the North Caribbean at 18.1 degrees North Latitude and 63.3 degrees West Longitude. It lies directly across the path of the balmy north trade winds. The island has a beautiful tropical climate with summer-like conditions year around.
Beaches The beaches in St Maarten are unparalleled in the Caribbean: They are clean, their sand is white, and the sea is clear and aqua blue. The island is blessed with over 30 white sandy beaches. All of them are beautiful, each with its own special charm and character. You can choose from the isolated, romantic little cove, to beaches where action is going on day and night. You will find beaches with waves high enough for surfers, and others, calm ones, for a completely relaxing experience.
For the daring and uninhibited, Orient Beach is the most developed, the most popular and the busiest beach on the island, probably the most famous beach in the entire Caribbean. The beach is reputed as much for its natural beauty and setting as it is for being the island´s foremost “swimsuit optional” beach.
Closer to our home base is the beautiful Dawn Beach, a fine beach of sugar white powdery sand facing the East side of Sint Maarten. The name says it all: early risers may enjoy spectacular views of sunrise with St. Barths in the distance. Snorkeling is absolutely incredible.
Of course there are many, many more beaches you will be able to explore during your time there.
Water Sports
Snorkel on one of the top 5 Snorkel beaches: Dawn Beach, Pinel Island, Baie Rouge, Petite Plage in Grand Case to Creole Rock and Little Bay. Diving, jet skiing, kayaking, Sailing, Sunfish sailing, surfing, surf biking, windsurfing and body surfing are also popular water sports. Deep sea fishing is also a wonderful way to spend the day as well as a sailing or motor boat charter to another island. Scuba Diving Divers have long recognized the Caribbean as one of the world's best diving venues. Its warm, shallow waters create ideal conditions, and St. Maarten's diving is true to the good reputation of the region as a whole. Water temperatures average a comfortable 70 degrees F (21 C), while visibility ranges between 75 and 125 feet (22-37 m).
The islands reefs are rich and often located close to shore, accessible to snorkelers as well as divers. The best snorkeling spots are off Little Bay Beach, Dawn Beach, and Maho Bay. Certified divers can rent tanks and equipment from watersport shops throughout the island. Beginners can take advantage of lessons from experienced professionals. Many of the island's resorts have scuba facilities on site.
One of the most popular dive sites is the wreck of the British man-of-war HMS Proselyte, which sank in 1801. Today its haunting remains lie atop a reef a mile south of Great Bay. Another common destination is the freighter Teigland, sunk deliberately on Cable Reef in 1993. It has already begun to attract animal life and underwater formations.
Nearby SABA island is a dormant volcano with no beaches and shear cliffs plunging 1000 feet to the ocean floor. Spires and unusual formations rise from the ocean floor to within 80 fee of the surface providing a unique Diving experience unlike any other.
Shopping Whether on the Dutch side or the French side, this Duty Free Island makes shopping a pure pleasure! Designer clothing, jewelry, watches, handbags and other leather goods, perfumes and cosmetics, linens, art, gourmet items, cigars and alcohol make this island paradise the perfect place to spend your time and your money!
Nightlife The St Maarten nightlife scene really offers something for everyone—whether you want to party at the hottest nightclubs, hit the slots at a casino or prefer a low-key night at a lounge or beach bar. Unlike other places where the action seems to slow down with nightfall, St. Maarten/St. Martin is known for its dynamic nightlife scene, which draws visitors from all over the world.
The Boardwalk along Great Bay Beach in Philipsburg has become a hot spot in its own right. Take a stroll, or pop into one of the restaurants lining The Boardwalk for dinner or drinks and soak in the ambience. The Maho area is the premier party destination in St. Maarten/St. Martin, thanks to the number of clubs, bars, lounges and casinos. Casinos are a great way to start or end your night, and the island's casinos offer everything from Antillean poker to roulette. And thanks to the many casinos located all over the Dutch side, chances are you'll never be too far away from that blackjack table. Need some ideas for your kind of evenings? Here are a few suggestions to get your imagination going.
What to do in St. Maarten/St.Martin to enjoy the island at night

Listen to the band at Lee's Deep Sea Fishing and Roadside Grill.

DINING:
The island is considered the gourmet capital of the Caribbean with more than 300 restaurants offering French, Italian, Dutch, Creole, Chinese, Thai and more.
Life is not necessarily a beach! Things to do besides the beach – Butterfly farm, Lotterie Farm at Pic Paradis where guests can sign up for eco-adventures and enjoy hiking on miles of groomed trails, Day Spas, Underwater Explorations, swim with the Dolphins, horseback riding, art galleries and museums.
Day Spas - Surprisingly, the small island of St. Maarten/St. Martin boasts a large number of spas—which offer many of the same treatments you might have found in a Roman thermae or Ottoman hammam. Just as spas revived the Roman legionnaires, the island's excellent spas will revive you from the "wounds of modern life" and will soothe your weariness through relaxation and pampering.
Rhino Riders - You don't need any experience to tame this beast. Adventurers of all ages are guaranteed a thrill of a lifetime ride that is safe, sturdy, reliable and... tons of fun! After a brief introduction to the basics of this beautiful water wanderer, you and your pal are off on a delightful jaunt upon the tropical waves to follow your personal guide to a splendid snorkeling spot. Experience the breathtaking beauty of our underwater world and its amazing inhabitants... then quench your thirst with a complimentary refreshment at one of the island's best known watering holes.
Day Trips – There are several nearby islands that make wonderful day trips and they can be reached by sea or air via private charters or group charters.
Anguilla is the nearest and easiest island to reach. There are ferries that leave Marigot harbor every half hour for the island and it is only a 20 minute ride at a cost of $12 one way. Once there you will see a vast difference between this island and St. Maarten – St. Martin. Topographically speaking it is long and flat and more semi arid than St. Martin. There are some very beautiful beaches, however, and this and the snorkeling alone make the trip worth while. This has become a very pricey island with a few very luxurious hotels and gourmet restaurants. There is a golf course being built which will be a big draw to people visiting the island.
St. Barths is a very small but sophisticated island, rich in history as well as jetsetters, rock stars, movie stars and royalty. They all flock here to get away from it all while enjoying the beauty of this very exclusive island. Haute couture shopping, beautiful beaches, exclusive hotels and villas as well as wonderful gourmet restaurants make this destination a real gem. A day trip to get the feel of how the rich and famous vacation is a fun thing to do and will not break the bank like staying on this beautiful little island for a week!
Saba and Nevis are also popular day trips and offer a look into the past as each island seems to have happily escaped the modern world of today. The museums, scenery, nature, rainforests and history make either island a trip to remember. Both are perfect for a day tour to a time long ago, past but not forgotten.
Soak up the Past with a little Island History
There is much more to St. Maarten/St. Martin than its sandy beaches and rolling green hills. A trip into the island's past as illustrated by its historical sites reveals a seriousness and purpose.
Fort Louis
Built as part of Sun King Louis XIV of France's vision to better defend his Caribbean holdings, Fort Louis has been guarding Baie de l'Embouchure since 1766. The fort, accessible by foot, gives a spectacular view of the French side capital, Marigot, as well as surrounding areas and the neighboring island, Anguilla. The location was chosen in 1666 by a French Naval Officer of the Engineering Corps, François Blondel, who was given the task of finding a suitable defensive position. The hill, close to the developing town, was selected as the ideal place to provide protection and fend off any English attacks.
Mount Vernon Plantation
Sitting on two acres of a lush, green valley, Mount Vernon Plantation takes visitors back to the sugar-making days of 1786. It is the only site on the island that has been restored to most of its authentic state. Guided tours recreate the processes of making sugar, coffee and rum. Surrounded by tropical fruit trees is the "Maison de Maître" (master's house), a stone and wooden structure of the rarest kind. Rounding off the plantation are gardens of spices. The plantation, a short distance from Orient Bay, is a place to see living history and discover the secrets of rum making and aromatic coffee brewing.
Fort Amsterdam
Christened Fort Amsterdam more than 270 years ago, the fort walls and sentry house are testimony to the strength of ancient building techniques. How ever, the "guardian" of Great Bay had one major flaw — its cannons and guns could not span the 1,600-meter-wide bay to adequately defend it. The site is accessible through Divi Little Bay Resort and is crisscrossed by hiking paths curling along the massive walls that lead to breathtaking vistas.
Emilio Wilson Estate
Emilio Wilson Estate, circa 1750, ties the past and present together like no other site on the island. Spanning from the valley to the top of Sentry Hill on the Dutch side, this former sugar plantation was the home of the island's first governor, John Philips, after whom Philipsburg is named. Plantation Industry, as Philips called it, was later acquired by the von Romandts, one of the first families to settle here. The oldest descendant of the family's Caribbean branch, Douglas Sinclair Cannegieter, still lives on Front Street and celebrated his 99th birthday in 2007. The estate was later sold to Emilio Wilson.
