About Playa Ocotal, Coco Beach, Costa Rica and Local Activities
Playa Ocotal - our beach
Playa Ocotal is located at the end of a winding road just 3 Km southwest of Playas del Coco. The beach is small and enchanting, framed with high dramatic hills. The volcanic sand is dark, almost black in areas and is fine and soft to the touch. Vast trees create cool shade over a good portion of the sand and make this a popular beach for picnicking.
The hills are peppered with striking villas and private homes that look out across the open ocean. There is a resort here, a few hotels, and a casual restaurant right on the beach, Father Roosters. Bahia Pez Vela is the next cove to the southwest and is even more secluded. Large rental condos and a lovely restaurant are the only two things that call Bahia Pez Vela home. Playa Ocotal and Bahia Pez Vela offer a quiet get away, but are close enough to get to the action in minutes.

Father Roosters Beachside Bar and Grill
About Coco Beach - our second beach and town
One of the most accessible beaches in Costa Rica is Coco Beach. Playas del Coco or Coco Beach is located between Playa Hermosa to the North and Playa Ocotal to the South. The town gets its name from the many Coconut Palms that fill the area. The beach sits nicely in a horseshoe bay with scenic vegetation covering the rolling hills. Within 35 km (22 miles) from Liberia, the road to Coco beach is pretty good with many connections, quite rare for Costa Rica's roads. This beach is full of beachfront hotels, condos, bars and restaurants, it's a great place to have some fun, but not alone, so if you are looking for a quiet place, stay at OUR beach in Ocotal. Several options for fishing tours can be found in Coco Beach, with half and full days trips including captain, food and tackle. The beach, it's great, not too big and not too small, with white sand on one of the most beautiful beaches of south Guanacaste. Coco Beach was one of the first beaches in the Pacific where many Costa Ricans came from the Central Valley to spend vacations or just a weekend.
The center of Coco exudes energy and local flavor. The paved main street runs through town and ends right on the beach's edge. Local and international restaurants and bars, colorful shops, and street markets line this lively road. Many community services are offered in Coco such as a large supermarket, bank, clinic, and Immigration office.
What to do in Coco Beach?
Of course, water sports is the most popular. Scuba-diving high season is from April to September, nearby islands like Bat and Catalina's are hot places to see sharks and turtles. Another popular water sport in Coco beach is sailing. Surfers can get a boat out to Witch's Rock, one of the many famous surfing spots in the country. . Other attractions near Coco Beach are several beautiful places like Cacique Point, Pelonas Island and Ollies Point to which daily boats trips are organized. A visit to Hermosa Beach, Ocotal Beach and Panama Beach is a must aas well.
Several options to do and to see n Coco Beach. Our recommendation is horseback ridding in Rincon De La Vieja Volcano in a day tour enjoying of the natural chimneys and a mineral mud bath in thermal pools near the volcano. Also many accommodation options in hotels, modern condo rentals and camping areas, besides good restaurants along the whole coastline.
