Southern charm, hospitality and history imbue Charleston, one of the most well-preserved cities in the United States. Visitors can't help but feel they have been magically transported to another era. Stroll down cobblestone streets past magnificent churches, grand mansions and beautiful gardens, all meticulously maintained. History buffs will relish the old plantations and numerous historical museums dedicated to the Civil War and the Old South. Steeped in tradition, Charleston still manages a modern flare. Fine restaurants featuring gourmet Southern cuisine and fashionable boutiques line the streets of downtown. This effortless mix of past and present attracts visitors from around the world.

To get acquainted with Charleston we'll take a carriage ride, especially one those that takes us through the South of Broad neighborhood. After the ride, carriage companies will drop us off near the Old City Market north of Broad, where we can wander looking for souvenirs, antiques and other cool shops. Then we'll head to lunch to one of the astounding restaurants there before before hoofing it along the bay side park to the Battery and White Point Gardens; and take time for a house tour or two at mansions such as the Nathaniel Russell House and the Heyward-Washington House. We'll back along beautiful King street. We'll spend the early evening in the historic district nightclub area where we'll dine and visit some discos, jazz bars and perhaps sing a few songs at the extremely popular Irish Pub Karen and I found when we previewed Charleston earlier this year. Of course all of this is subject to change based on the group's wishes, but it's a good plan.

Perhaps Sunday we could visit one of the famous Plantations from the late 1700's early 1800's on the way back to Atlanta. I would suggest Middleton or Boones as being the most interesting with gorgeous grounds as well as spectacular homes.
