About Dominical, Costa Rica and Local Activities

Located on Costa Rica’s amazingly beautiful Central Pacific coastline, the small village of Dominical is a surfer’s paradise where waves can reach over 10 feet high. Attracting surfers not only from across the country, but from all over the world, this village is a great place to lie back and enjoy the various activities and water sports found around here.

A tiny coastal town 28 miles south of Quepos and the gorgeous Manuel Antonio National Park, Dominical is a 4 km long beach strip, with a few hotels, lodges, resorts and restaurants in the area. With its stunning backdrop of lush green forests and palm tress, this beach is also a great place to bird watch or take a CANOPY TOURS of the surrounding locale.

With near perfect weather all year long, Dominical has warm temperatures during the day and a cool ocean breeze by night. Many surfers who often come here usually sleep on the beach under the stars. However, there are accommodations here to suit every pocket. Dining is a fabulous experience in Dominical, especially if you love seafood. There are a number of local restaurants or ‘sodas’ in the area, which serve everything from fresh lobsters and shrimps to delicious crabs and fish (often at costs around $4).

One can kayak off the coast or enjoy some diving or snorkeling opportunities in the area. Horseback tours can also be arranged to the nearby Nauyaca Waterfalls, or one can visit the Marino Ballena National Park, which is home to a number of marine mammals like turtles and whales that come here seasonally to mate and nest. If you like, you can take a short day trip to the lovely Caño Island (world famous SCUBA diving) just off the coast or to to Hacienda Baru National Wild life Refuge . This island is considered one of the best adventure diving spots in the world and is home to an impressive array of underwater marine life.

Much of the surf beach is too intense for swimming during low tide, but 1 km south (about half a mile) of Dominical lies Punta Dominical and Dominicalito, a laid back beach ideal for swimming and other sports activities. Here the vegetation starts changing into a lush tropical wet forest thus offering great enticement to nature lovers.

Cano Island Biological Reserve is located in the Pacific Ocean 15 km. off of the Osa Peninsula. The border of the island has white sandy beaches and a well protected in-shore reef makes this island the best spot in Costa Rica for scuba diving and snorkeling. Normally there is great visibility, about 20 meters (65 ft), providing for clear sightings of the many species living in the island's waters: fish, turtles, manta rays, dolphins and whales to name a few.
The island's main trail is well maintained, leading uphill into a pristine rainforest. 50 meter tall trees and Pre-Columbian tombs are scattered along the trail. The island's main points of interest are that it was used by ancient indigenous peoples inhabiting the southern coastal area as a burial site and many of Costa Rica's mysterious spherical stones of varying sizes have been found on the island.

Manuel Antonio State Park is constituted by beautiful beaches and by the surrounding vegetation of the forest that grows right next to the coastline. The four beaches are: Espadilla Sur, Manuel Antonio, Escondido and Playita. Visitors can walk on the beach or in the cooler trails in the forest, where they can spot animals including monkeys (capuchin and howler for the most part) sloths, raccoons and quatamundis or “pizotes”, caimans, river otters, pacas, and even ocelots. The best time for spotting most animals is early in the morning.
